In a huge coup for the Warriors and the Super League, the England halfback has ended speculation over his future by signing a new deal with his hometown club.

Rugby director Kris Radlinski said: George is a superstar. Some great players have worn this No.6 here - Trent Barrett, Shaun Edwards, Brett Kenny - I’m confident he’ll be talked about in the same breathe.”

Wigan used their Facebook page to make the announcement, with Williams signing the extension on a live video in front of Radlinski.

His decision was warmly welcomed by fans, who feared they may lose the talented playmaker to the NRL.

But the 22-year-old did tell Wigantoday.net last month he would like to extend his deal, which was due to run out after 2018, if they could strike the right deal.

It is unclear whether the changes to the salary cap, which saw the base-limit rise and saw the introduction of a second marquee player allowance from next year, played a role.

The announcement was made less than 48 hours before Wigan host St Helens in the Good Friday derby.
