THE final preparations for Armed Forces Day on Saturday are almost complete.
Details of the event have now been published and the day promises a visual treat as well as family entertainment alongside the formalities.
From 10.30am and 4pm, the town centre will be filled with military memorabilia including several military vehicles such as a Spitfire, weapon carriers, jeeps, motorcycles and army Green Goddesses.
These will be joined by stalls from various organisations including the Army, RAF and Navy.
At 10.45am, there will be a parade of Veterans and members of uniformed organisations. This starts at Crompton Street and goes up Standishgate to the cenotaph at Wigan Parish Church.
The salute will be taken at Market Place by Major Linda Taberner QARANC; the Leader of Wigan Council Lord Smith of Leigh and the Mayor, Cllr Myra Whiteside. The parade will be concluded with a short service at the cenotaph.
At 12.15pm, a Pipe Band will be performing in Wigan’s Market Place.
This will be followed by a Morris Dancing Display at 1pm and a performance at 2pm by the More Than Words theatre group.
Organisers have extended a welcome to veterans, members of uniformed organisations and anyone currently in service with the armed forces who want to take part in the parade.
The muster point is on Crompton Street between 10am and 10.30am on the day.
