Song bringing light from darkness

Singer-songwriter Bill Hart, who is one half of duo Hart-Carney, says new single Light From Darkness is the best thing he has ever done.

The track is based on the old Latin motto of Wigan College and former pupil Bill asked for people from around the globe to say the words in their native language.

The response was overwhelming, with the finished song containing no fewer than nine speakers of languages as varied as Mandarin, Portuguese, native American tongue Ute and Tagalog, which is spoken in South East Asia.

Bill said: “I got an incredible response from all over the world and I’m over the moon. I think it’s the best thing we’ve ever done.

“I got things started by asking my neighbour who is Portuguese and a friend who works in Germany got me the German, but then it went further afield.

“There’s a guy who works in Sydney but is originally Lebanese who said the words in Arabic and there’s also Tagalog. I’d never even heard of it before but someone I know through the Lankykats collective said they had a friend who spoke it.

“The message of the song is about encouraging people to get off their backsides, stop vegetating in front of the TV and do something with their life.

“For me that’s usually through education but it could also be activities or voluntary work. It’s a plain and simple message.”

Bill admits Light From Darkness is rather different to Hart-Carney’s usual songs, with some listeners telling him it has a Peter Gabriel vibe.

The single will also feature on upcoming album Huhh-ho, Hart-Carney’s follow-up to 2014 debut Tah-dahhh, which is expected to be released this summer.

The album will also showcase the more established sound of the duo, made up of Bill on vocals and drums and Jack Carney on guitar, bass, piano and vocals, which takes influences from rock ‘n’ roll, pop and folk.

The single is available and is free to download, although Bill is asking music fans to make a small donation to a charity of their choice.
