IT RAISED eyebrows and temperatures at its premier in Venice - and now it’s coming to Wigan.
Guiseppe Verdi’s controversial and infamous Italian opera Rigoletto is set to carve another notch in its fortunes by being screened live at Wigan’s Empire Cinema.
It will be streamed live from the Royal Opera House in London exclusively to the Robin Park based screens on Tuesday, April 17 for a one-off show.
Directed by David McVicar, Rigoletto is the story of a tormented jester’s quest for vengeance against his heartless playboy employer the Duke of Mantua, who has seduced Rigoletto’s innocent daughter, Gilda.
Home to countless London West End celebrity film premieres, Rigoletto is Empire Cinemas’ latest step towards creating a world class cinema experience.
Other recent events have included a live screening of The Royal Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet, Frankenstein from the National Theatre, Faithless: Passing The Baton Live from Brixton Academy, The Phantom of the Opera, The Sleeping Beauty and Alfie: The Bring Him Home Tour.
Marketing Director of Empire Cinemas Jon Nutton said: “We’re really pleased to bring Verdi’s notorious Rigoletto to audiences in Wigan.
“To show an opera that was first performed in Venice is exciting and we’re pleased to be in a position to make sure that more people than ever are given that opportunity.”
