THE World’s biggest coffee morning is coming to Wigan this month.
The event is Macmillan Cancer Support’s biggest fund-raiser and involves people from all over the country holding coffee mornings. Last year, gatherings in Wigan raised £19,000.
This year will be Macmillan’s 21st World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and £21,000 is the target being set in Wigan.
Last year, 43,000 people signed up to hold a coffee morning across the whole of the UK, raising more than £8m.
The event started in 1990, when a local fund-raising committee decided to hold a coffee morning where people came along to meet and mingle – as they might ordinarily do – but donate the cost of their coffee to Macmillan in the process.
The first National World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was in 1991, when 2,600 people registered to hold coffee mornings across the country and from then it has grown, raising more than £60m.
Coronation Street star Simon Gregson has thrown his support behind the scheme and urged Wiganers to get involved.
He said: “We all know somebody who has been affected by cancer. Macmillan provides vital medical, emotional, practical and financial support to people, and their families, living with cancer.”
