A WIGAN music label owner has made the step from backstage to centre stage after becoming the star of a new single.

K.J. Maclean, who runs Billinge-based Dedleg Music, teamed up with the Vitoria-Gasteiz Orchestra from Spain to produce pop-classical crossover track Somewhere.

The new song sees songwriter K.J take on microphone duties after his interpretation of the song’s vocal part, which was initially intended only as a guide track for another artist to follow, was so liked by the orchestra they decided to make it the final version.

K.J first approached the Spanish ensemble about collaborating after meeting the orchestra’s musical director at the Cannes Music Festival and discuss recording one of the instrumental pieces he had written.

Despite being the first time K.J had worked with an orchestra, initial work on a single piece of music quickly expanded, with an initial session of three tracks followed up by recording six new songs, including two with vocals.

The resulting song offers an intriguing fusion of K.J’s pop songwriting and the huge, sweeping soundscapes which can be produced by a classical orchestra. The orchestra has previously recorded albums for Readers’ Digest and appeared on the soundtracks of many Spanish TV programmes.
