AN up-and-coming Wigan rock band hopes the release of their debut EP will be their first step on the way to success.

Hard rockers The Fifth Root, who formed just over two years ago, recently held a launch gig for their release Upon Deeper Tides at The Honeysuckle.

The four-track release shows off the band’s range of influences from across the classic and alternative rock spectrum, with the band citing influences including modern groups such as HIM, Avenged Sevenfold and Lostprophets, alternative rockers such as Alter Bridge and classic metal bands Metallica, Guns N’Roses and Motley Crue.

The five-piece, made up of vocalist Adam Murphy, the twin guitar attack of Matt Lunn and Ryan Gill, bassist Matty Ashton and drummer Mark Randall, formed at The Byrchall High School in 2010 and hope the release of Upon Deeper Tides, recorded last autumn at White Bear Studios in Adlington, will see them take a significant step forward on the scene in 2013.

Guitarist Matt Lunn said: “The EP is something we’ve wanted to do for a while, and it’s also the end of an era as our sound is changing a bit. We used to be heavier, and more of a hard rock band, but we’re moving more towards alternative rock now. We have very varied influences: our drummer is a big heavy metal fan, our other guitarist is into Jeff Buckley and artists like that, our bassist is a big fan of Motley Crue and our singer likes bands like Pearl Jam.”

The Fifth Root have already made an impression in Wigan as well as playing at the Dry Bar in Manchester and the iconic Cavern Club in Liverpool, despite having a quiet recent gigging schedule due to personnel changes which saw Adam and Ryan join the group.

With the new line-up complete, the band hope to play more gigs and secure some bigger support slots in 2013.

The Fifth Root are also currently considering showing off their softer side with a free acoustic EP slated for next year, as well as recording more new material.
