A WIGAN band is hoping hard work will put it on the road to success after launching its debut EP.
Four-piece Lyon Road released the four tracks of Cognition with a launch night last week following a rapid rise through the borough’s music scene.
The group, made up of singer Tom Byrom, guitarist Alex O’Brien, bassist Sam Birchall and drummer Cameron Gaskell, formed only around 12 months ago but have astonished music fans with the speed of their development and songwriting.
Lyon Road, whose sound is a mixture of ‘80s pop acts such as Tears for Fears and contemporary alternative rock bands like Kings of Leon, is now being managed by arts hub The Old Courts after the organisation based in the former 19th century seat of justice on Crawford Street was impressed by their sound and maturity.
The group’s manager Jonathan Davenport said: “They are really ambitious, wise beyond their years and really hard working.
“They are perfectionists when it comes to their live show, nothing is left to chance and the attention to detail really shows through in their performances.
“The group’s sound is unique and they have some unusual influences for a band who are 20 or under.
They have got that classic ‘80s sound and when I told them their songs sounded a bit like Tears For Fears they said they were big fans of them and Level 42, whereas I wasn’t sure if they would have heard of them.
“They’ve also got a heavier side but it’s not about distortion or overdrive, it’s about layering up the sound and the relationship between the guitars.
“It’s an age-old technique but not something you associate with new bands, especially in the North West.”
Lyon Road launched Cognition with a headlining show at The Old Courts and Jonathan says he is now working on getting them onto stages introducing new acts at next year’s festivals.
The EP was recorded, mixed and mastered in house with Paul O’Neill on production duties and the group is now looking at producing a music video.
