Maximes’ second coming

ROCKERS in Wigan will be able to make their first trip in years to an iconic venue this Bank Holiday weekend.

Rock and dance venue Maximes, which recently re-opened under its original name after being re-branded as WN One, will host a night of heavy riffs and driving rock rhythms as experienced scene stalwarts and

up-and-coming talents take to the stage on Bank Holiday Sunday.

The night, which is being organised by rock DJ Paul Maiden, sees a packed line-up of four bands from the Wigan scene at the Standishgate venue, which previously hosted one of the town’s best-known rock nights for many years.

The gig will kick off with sets from young band Ookami, whose mixture of modern metal, thrash and black metal influenced by the likes of Machine Head, Sepultura and Death.

And they will be followed Osiris, who blend churning death metal riffs and thundering breakdowns with melodic choruses influenced by classic heavy metal.

There will also be a set of sweeping, melodic hard rock from SecondSon, and classic heavy metal and thrash riffs in the style of Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne and Thin Lizzy from Sacrament, who will be playing original songs from their album In The Eyes of Creation.

The live acts will be followed by DJ sets from promoter Paul, who says he is looking forward to working at such an iconic venue on the Wigan scene and hopes the town’s rockers will support the newly re-named Maximes.

Paul said: “It’s more of an old-style, classic metal night.

“Sacrament have toured with some really decent bands, and a couple of the younger bands I’ve put on previously at Fuzzbox Studios, so it’s nice to be able to return the favour and get them a slot at a bigger venue.

“I’ve always made sure local lads are supported, as I was in some bands when I was younger, and I know just how hard it can be to get a break and find people who will give you a chance.

“I’m looking to get Maximes back to a reputable rock venue again and make it a place for live events.

“I’m definitely looking to get some signed bands on as well, because it’s an ideal size for touring bands, and there’s not too many places like that in Wigan.”

The Maximes rock night will be on Sunday, starting at 8pm.

Tickets are £3 on the door.
