A WEDDING singer who only took up music after being bribed by his teacher has been named as the North West’s top crooner.
John Norcott scooped the accolade at the County Brides North West Wedding Awards after topping a poll of recently married couples and staff at wedding venues.
But it is doubtful the 33-year-old would even have picked up a microphone but for the intervention of a music teacher at his old school, Lowton High.
Dad-of-three John, of Spring View, said: “I got coaxed into being a singer by my music teacher at school,
“I used to just sit reading magazines and listen to my Walkman in music lessons and she wanted more male characters in the production of West Side Story.
“So instead of telling my dad I was not working hard, she coaxed me into taking part and I never looked back.
“I like making people happy and wanting to go to work at doing that is so enjoyable.
“It is great to be part of such a special occasion.”
Although increasingly in demand as a wedding singer and DJ, John is preparing to branch out by launching his own talent agency - Ntertain.
He will source talent for the big day, providing a range of singers, plus a host of additional features such as a casino table, photo booth and chocolate fountain.
The swing singer, who met his wife while working as a singer on a cruise ship, said: “It was fantastic to win the award as it was voted for by the people I have worked for, so to get that appreciation and recognition is fantastic. Last year I was runner-up as I was voted top male vocalist in the category, but I did not win an award.
“I am also excited about launching my new business - Ntertain.
“There is a wide variety from a swing singer like me, to rock music, so there is something for everyone.”
People are invited to the launch of Ntertain at Revolution, King Street, Wigan, tonight from 7pm.
