THE Wigan Warriors showcase stage is celebrating a decade of bringing the borough’s best up-and-coming bands to thousands of sports fans this season.

The stage, which is currently in the players’ car park opposite the DW Stadium’s north stand, puts on local acts before some of the most prestigious fixtures in the Super League calendar.

Having introduced Wiganers to the likes of The Atomic Hound Dog, Boomin and Victorian Dad, the stage could give more names to watch in the future a valuable moment in the spotlight this season.

The showcase will start with a bang with Inside View, who are about to release new album Hollywood, playing before the World Club Series match against the Brisbane Broncos on February 21.

Organiser Andy Unsworth said: “There’s usually about six or seven showcases throughout the year for the major games and the Big One event. This year certainly has a spectacular start.

“It’s wonderful to think that in 10 years lots of young people have seen live music for the first time and may now be in bands themselves.

“We’ve always tried to mix it up from harder rock to indie to singer songwriters. We’ve even had some hardcore dirty dance music on.”

Warriors fan Andy originally contacted the club to ask whether the town’s strong music scene at the time could be given the chance to show off its skills for Wigan’s rugby league fans.

The club immediately agreed to put on the showcase and the borough’s groups have been performing original material before kick off since.

Andy said: “The fans have really accepted it, both the home and away supporters. Some people regularly come past the stage and it’s a real part of their Friday or Saturday nights.”

The club has also given its support to another season of supporting local acts.

Wigan Warriors marketing director Simon Collinson said: “We are delighted with the success of the Showcase Stage, it really has become a valuable element of our matchday entertainment package at the DW Stadium.

“We’ve had some tremendous talent on there over the past 10 years and look forward to welcoming more many musicians in the years to come.”

The organisers are still looking to hear from bands who could perform a set of mainly original material on the stage this season.
