Customers at participating businesses can get 50 per cent off food and non-alcoholic drinks every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between August 3 and 31.

There is no minimum spend and the money will be automatically available to diners, with the businesses then being reimbursed by the Government.

The scheme is open to any food business registered with the local authority which provides meals or snacks to be eaten on the premises or provides or shares a dining area.

A number of large restaurant and fast-food chains, including McDonald's, Frankie and Benny's, Burger King and Pizza Express, are taking part.

Prominent pubcos which offer food have also signed up.

Tens of thousands of businesses have already registered for the scheme, according to HMRC.
