Wigan Council has extended the application process for the discretionary business grant scheme until June 30 to help those excluded from the Government’s Covid-19 business grant scheme.

Around £52m has already been distributed to almost 5,000 businesses over the last few months, with a further £780,000 from the new fund given to 140 businesses since June 2 to help with running costs during the crisis.

Council leader Coun David Molyneux said: “Originally, businesses had two weeks from the opening date to apply but due to the success of the scheme locally, we decided to extend the window so we could support as many businesses as possible.

“Where we hold details, we have contacted businesses that fall into a priority group directly, but we have also been inundated with proactive businesses all keen to access the fund.

“The local economy is key to the borough’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, and we pledge to do all we can to ensure our businesses can continue to thrive.”

The announcement comes in the same week as the borough’s high streets reopened, with all non-essential shops, including indoor market halls, able to restart business.

The borough’s car parks have also opened, with parking charges reintroduced for non-NHS staff.

Coun Molyneux added: “Throughout this crisis we have been in contact with our businesses to inform them of updates and funding opportunities. To see our town centres open again is encouraging and we’re pleased with how our businesses have adapted to ensure social distancing guidelines can be met.

“We will continue to work with our business owners to ensure the safety of the public and their workforces. We continue to encourage the public to keep distance from others, to wear face coverings on public transport and to be aware of the risks when leaving the household.”

Business owners affected by the Covid-19 outbreak who think they may be eligible for the discretionary business grant scheme should visit www.wigan.gov.uk/discretionarybusinessgrant.

Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."
