Retail reflections: vintage pictures of Wigan Woolworths from the 1960s to '80s

The popularity of this week’s gallery of Debenhams pictures from back in the day has prompted us to mine the Wigan Today archives for images from another former high street name. Woolworth’s went into administration 16 years ago but it’s 40 years since Wigan last had a store here, occupying as it did the unit at the top of Standishgate later taken by John Menzies and WHSmith. But there has been recent talk of the business’s German owner bringing it back to Britain's streets.

These vintage images were taken in the 1960s through to the store’s closure in 1982.
