The Chadwicks site in the middle of Standish is currently being cleared to make way for the McCarthy and Stone development.

There will be around 100 retirement apartments on the site of the butcher and cafe which sold out to the developer and closed this time last year.

But leaflets being delivered to people in Standish say the first homeowners will only be moving into the homes in “early 2022.”

The leaflet reads: “Our modern and stylish apartments at High Street, Standish, are coming soon.

“Sales release: Summer 2021, welcoming first homeowners early 2022.”

It adds that if people want to register their interest, they can call 0800185 5069 or find out more information by visiting mccarthyandstone.co.uk.

The retirement scheme was approved by Wigan Council in September last year despite concerns from residents over the plans to knock down one of the oldest buildings in the town’s high street.

The complex will offer retirement apartments, extra care facilities and around-the-clock support for vulnerable residents local to Standish who may be looking to downsize.

It will also bring new use to a site which was vacated by Chadwick Family’s Fine Food Emporium in July 2019, with the business closing its doors after serving the town since 1761.
