Applications are now open for Yarrow Schools Teaching Alliance's School Direct Programme, which could see you qualify as a primary teacher over the course of a year.

The Yarrow Schools Teaching Alliance is the perfect training provider for adults with a passion to retrain in a fulfilling and rewarding new career. Suitable for graduates of any discipline, the one-year course awards Qualified Teacher Status.

This course is very practical with placements in our member Alliance schools. Trainees spend four days a week in the classroom, working alongside the class teacher and receiving intensive mentoring and training and, as a result, over the course of their training gain valuable and practical experience. A further day is dedicated to theory-based learning, allowing trainees the chance to reflect on their practical experiences and develop a thorough understanding of pedagogy.

Rob Horne, Head of YSTA, said: “This year our open events will, depending upon any Covid restrictions, take place in person and at St. George’s CE Primary School in Chorley. By holding the events in school, we can give potential students a real idea of what life is like in a primary school.

“After a turbulent year there are many people looking to change career, and previous student cohorts have included former police officers, paralegals, teaching assistants and lecturers. In fact, many graduates already have the transferable life skills and work experience which would make them superb candidates. Some of the student teachers are recent graduates, but others are looking for a change in direction in their 30s and 40s, and bring valuable experience to the role.”Rob added: “The qualities we are looking for in people are that they are hardworking – they really take pride in whatever job they currently have – and that they are passionate, enthusiastic and determined.

“We want people with a positive attitude, who are also very nurturing and caring.

“On successful completion training, trainees will not only hold Qualified Teacher Status but be ready and classroom confident – ready to take their first steps in a career that will bring reward and challenge in equal measure.”

Applications for the full-time course open in early October. Visit our website www.YSTA.co.uk for details of our open events and how to apply for places on our programme.
