Written by Wigan Athletic supporter Jay Whittle, the correspondence says the chain of events that led to the owners pulling the plug just weeks after taking over should be properly probed and urged MPs in the North West to raise the issue.

Concerns have been raised over why money promised was not forthcoming.

The letter also echoes criticisms of the English Football League (EFL) made by Wigan MP Lisa Nandy, with demands for information on how the new ownership of the club came to be given the green light.

It also outlines the severe consequences should attempts to put the club back on a financial even keel not be successful.

The letter states: "The news the club would be going into administration left Wigan Athletic fans reeling and seeking clarification after the announcement came out of the blue.

"I urge that the authorities take action. A full and thorough investigation must be carried out before it is too late and a community loses its beloved football club.

"The impact of what could happen to Wigan Athletic would be harrowing through loss of jobs, education programmes and the lifeblood of an entire community that lives and breathes for that football club."

The letter had attracted more than 700 retweets and over 600 likes on Twitter by Thursday afternoon.
