Wigan's new market hall will have 39 stalls and six 'larger retail spaces', bosses reveal
Wigan’s new market hall at Fettlers is due to open in the spring.
Town hall bosses have revealed how many stalls will be available at the new market in Wigan town centre.
Work is currently taking place at Wigan Market at Fettlers, which will be operated by Wigan Council and is expected to open in the spring.
The local authority has now confirmed there will be 39 market stalls and six larger retail spaces.
A Facebook post from Fettlers Wigan said: “The new market will feature 39 market stalls, along with six larger retail spaces, creating opportunities for local businesses and helping to shape a vibrant destination at the heart of Fettlers.
“Today, we met with existing market traders and are working closely with them to support a smooth transition into the new market.
“The new Wigan Market remains on track to open in spring 2027 and we can't wait to share more updates as the project continues to take shape.”
Last week we reported the council had started to accept applications from businesses, makers and event organisers wishing to hold stalls at the market.
The new centre is expected to have space for a mix of independent retail, fresh food, street food and kitchens, bars and cafes, makers, services, and a programme of events and entertainment throughout the day and into the evening.
But some traders in the current market have complained that there are not enough stall areas in the new development for them all to occupy.
The market was initially expected to open this year, but was delayed after the council parted company with hospitality partner Northern Lights Group, allowing more time to create a centre that supports existing businesses and offers the best possible experience for visitors.
Once traders have moved from the current market hall to the new one, the older building will be demolished.
The market hall is just the first phase of Fettlers – a large-scale redevelopment of the former Galleries shopping complex in Wigan town centre.
Once complete, it will have more than 400 homes, a leisure building, bars and restaurants, and the 144-guest room Hampton by Hilton hotel, with the aim of creating a vibrant, mixed-use neighbourhood.
