A homebuilder has sparked the imagination of Wigan pupils with a fun-filled Design a University workshop.

The day was delivered to Orrell St Peter’s High School year 11s by members of the Northstone team and saw them talk about every area involved in a development from planning, to project management and estimating, right through to completion and sales and marketing.

Students were then tasked with designing their own university, delivering a mini-plan that incorporated all of the key elements with the Northstone team selecting a winner for the best proposal.

Jarod Kelly, land and partnerships manager at Northstone, said: “We had a fantastic time working with St Peter’s pupils, it was brilliant to see how engaged they all were and the amazing plans they were able to put together showcasing everything they had learnt, in such a short space of time.

“We’re hopeful it’s opened their eyes to some of the different careers within construction and sparked their interest to explore opportunities in this area when they move on to the next stage of their education. We were incredibly impressed by their behaviour and attitude and want to thank each and every one of them for what was a great day!”

Northstone, whose Tulach development is located just a short distance from St Peter’s on the former Pemberton Colliery site, proactively works with various schools and colleges close to its developments, driven by a desire to inspire and educate the next generation of construction workers. To date in 2024 alone, it has delivered multiple workshops and site visits to more than five local schools, colleges and further education initiatives.

Nova Maloney from St Peter’s said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Northstone for coming in and delivering such a fun and inspiring day for our Year 11 pupils, shining a light on many different roles within construction. This is the third year of running this engaging initiative and it is such a joy to see the teamwork and ideas coming forward from the students.

“These pupils are at an age where they are considering their career options and next steps and to have the opportunity to hear from construction experts and complete a fun-challenge, with their guidance, that showcases the many different careers in this area alone is such a valuable experience for them and one we are incredibly grateful to have been able to offer. We’d like to say a huge thank you to Northstone and look forward to next year!”
