High-flying students were joined by proud parents, staff, governors and special guests on Thursday 3rd May to celebrate their outstanding achievements at Winstanley College’s annual Awards Evening

The ceremony, began with bucks fizz, canapés and top quality musical entertainment performed by talented students: Lewis Tang (piano) and Tehya Driver (guitar).

Dr Nayyar Naqvi, college governor, opened the ceremony with an inspirational speech and went on to present all the subject awards.

A number of other prestigious awards were presented throughout the evening including ‘Charities and Community Champion Award’, presented by Brighter Better Orrell to Miya Woodward-Green (formerly Hawkley Hall High School), and ‘The Mulroy Award’, for effective debating skills presented by Paul Mulroy to Jake Hughes (Bridgewater High School).

Jacob Guiness, formerly of Rainford High School, took home The Governors’ Award for Academic Achievement which recognises academic ability and an effective balance of enrichment and other interests.

The Principal’s Award for Contribution to the College and Community went to Mayukhi Mittal, formerly of Merchant Taylors’, and Ruby Coleman (Fred Longworth High School), whilst The Pride of Winstanley Awards were presented to Harrison Bailey (St. Edmund Arrowsmith RCHS), Heidi Cooper (Golborne High School) and Kyle Dixon (Outwood Grange High School, Haydock).

Other Cross College award winners included: Holly Garner (Moorside High School) for The Barry Marshall Award and Olivia Kelly (Standish High School) for The David Atherton Award.

The evening was rounded off with a speech from special guest and local MP Yvonne Fovargue.

Principal, Louise Tipping said: “The annual awards is a favourite in our events calendar as it gives us chance to recognise and reward the amazing things our students do, whether it be academic achievement, sporting prowess or just making college a better place to be. Thank you to all the friends and family who came to celebrate with us, our students couldn’t achieve what they do without your support”.
