A large school which caters for students from 11 to 18 years old has organised two different opening evenings to let children and parents meet the team.

The Deanery is a Church of England school in Wigan. Its management team says it aims to provide an education for life, to allow the school community to flourish and live their life to the full.

Students signing up at age 11 can progress through all three key stages in the one familiar environment and with staff who know them well, with each year group set up to deliver the best possible chances.

There are 1400 pupils at the church school, with 200 of them in the sixth form.

Mr Wood, Headteacher said: “We have a culture of academic excellence and the highest expectations, set firmly within a guiding framework of Christian values.”

When are the opening evenings?

There is a school open evening from 5pm-7.30pm on Thursday, October 5; the sixth form open evening is at the same time, but on Thursday, October 19.

What do the inspectors say?

The Deanery was inspected by SIAMS in 2022, the feedback was impressive, with their report stating: “An outstanding environment where pupils naturally live out the school mantra ‘work hard, be kind, make a difference’.”

And last year the Ofsted report said: “Pupils feel safe and happy. They enjoy coming to school. Pupils’ welfare is at the heart of everything that staff do.”

Mr Wood added: “Educating children is a great responsibility and a privilege. We believe that every young person has gifts and talents waiting to be discovered and, should you choose The Deanery, I can assure you that your child will be given every opportunity to succeed and enjoy learning. In return, we ask that all pupils follow the simple mantra of ‘Work Hard, Be Kind, Make a Difference’.”

As a faith school, they are inspired by the words of Jesus quoted in John 10:10, and the mission is to provide an education for life, enabling all of our school community to flourish and live life to the full.

“We aim to provide a rich curriculum so that every child can find his or her niche and be able to experience success – and enjoy life at The Deanery in the process,” added Mr Wood.

Academic offerings and results

The Deanery offers a wide range of subjects at GCSE, BTEC and A Level, with a skilled team of tutors and support staff for every course.

Parents are kept closely informed of progress, and there is a high expectation of all pupils, to work hard and try their best. Balanced alongside those academic expectations, is a wide range of co-curricular experiences and opportunities, aimed at helping each pupil become a rounded and successful individual, and enjoying their time at The Deanery.

We look forward to welcoming prospective pupils and parents at our open evenings. No need to book, just attend on the evenings from 5pm - 7pm.
