Principal Anna Dawe has announced the tests will not be held as it is not possible to "safely conduct large-scale examination sessions under the current circumstances".

She said: "Following the announcement last night of another national lockdown, the closure of on-site learning for schools and colleges and the cancellation of summer exams, we have taken the decision to cancel on-site January examinations including controlled assessments. This decision has not been taken lightly but has been necessary, as we do not believe that we can safely conduct large-scale examination sessions under the current circumstances. The safety of our students and staff is our priority."

Assessment requirements will change as information is received from awarding bodies and students will be updated.

The college remains open to vulnerable young people and the children of key workers, with free bus passes available for those who need them.

Despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying it would not be possible for exams to go ahead "as normal" this summer, vocational exams are still due to take place this week at schools and colleges across England.

But organisations representing college leaders and students have called on the Government to cancel the January exam series, adding that it seems “impossible” they can go ahead.
