A Wigan college has moved to online learning for some students as attendances fall due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Lower sixth-form students at Winstanley College will no longer attend classes and instead continue their studies at home.

It follows a reduction in the number of staff and students at the centre due to self-isolation amid the pandemic.

It is understood there have not been any confirmed cases of Covid-19.

Initially the lower sixth-form students will do online learning until the college reopens after the Easter holiday on April 20, although this could change.

A spokesman said the college would remain open for other students for as long as possible.

Runshaw College, in Leyland, which many students from Wigan attend, also announced on Wednesday that it would be shut until Easter and classes held online.

Students were told the decision was forced by the growing number of staff and students staying away as a result of Covid-19.

St John Rigby College students were also sent home on Wednesday, but due to a power cut rather than coronavirus.
