Coronavirus: Wigan takeaway feeds more than 150 hospital workers for free

Taz Mahal in Walthew Lane, Platt Bridge, announced on its Facebook page that it would be "more than happy" to help the borough's NHS staff during their gruelling efforts to help combat the Coronavirus pandemic, which yesterday led the Government to shut down pubs, clubs, restaurants, cafes, theatres and leisure centres across the country.

The business wrote: "To all the staff at Wigan hospital we are more than happy to announce that if you need food for your self at work please give us a call and we will deliver the food to the hospital free of charge it’s all on us."

Staff at the popular Indian takeaway spent around seven hours cooking and delivering food to more than 150 staff at the hospital.

In a follow-up post, thanking employees for their hard work and its customers for sharing the good news, Taz Mahal said: "I would like to thank all my friends on Facebook all my customers and everyone who shared the post if it wasn’t for you guys yesterday wouldn’t have happened we proudly with your help fed over 150 NHS staff in seven hours.

"BIG thank you to my staff who worked seven hours without a break to make this all happen so if you look at the big picture it was all of you that deserve a pat in the back not just me if it wasn’t for all my loyal customer support to me over the years I would not have been able to do what I did yesterday so thank you to all of you guys as well for making it possible for me to do what I did yesterday for the NHS stuff with all your help."

Staff at Wigan Infirmary were delighted by the heartwarming gesture and shared images of themselves with their food after it was delivered, free of charge.

Regular customers were also full of praise for the takeaway.

"Always great good and service from you anyway but this is a lovely gesture to some very deserving people" one person wrote.

Another said: "What an amazing thing to do. I’m sure everybody will appreciate this so much".

Another commenter said: "How amazing, your kind generosity is brilliant and just shows that a community can all came together at times like this."
