Covid-19 case rates in Wigan continue to decrease

The data shows there were 1,042 cases identified in the borough between November 14 and November 20, giving a rate of 317 per 100,000 residents.

This puts Wigan right in the middle of the 10 local authorities in Greater Manchester, with the fifth-highest Covid-19 case rate.

The borough's rate is also above that for the North West (237.3 per 100,000 residents) and England (217.6 per 100,000 people).

However, the case rate also marks a continuing decline in the prevalence of Covid-19 in the borough.

The latest figure of 1,042 cases is the lowest recorded since the start of October and is less than half of the 2,247 cases recorded in the week ending October 30.

This picture is also visible across the borough, with 23 of the 25 wards seeing a decrease from the previous week.

Wigan Central had the highest rate of cases for the seven-day period running from November 13 to November 19, but also had a 47 per cent decrease on the number of cases in the previous week.

Second highest was Ince, which was one of the two areas to see an increase in the latest week.

Wigan West was the other ward where there was a rise and it also had the third-highest rate.

However, the tracker also recorded an increase in deaths in Wigan in which Covid-19 was mentioned.

There were 55 registered in the week ending November 13, a rise from the 47 in the previous week.

Wigan, like all the boroughs in Greater Manchester, is classed as a Very High Risk area and remains an area of concern on the national escalation framework.

Local contact tracing teams have successfully managed 93 per cent of contacts from all the cases escalated to them.
