Covid-19 rates in Wigan still going down and now among region's lowest

Only one local authority in Greater Manchester now has lower infection rates than the borough, Wigan Council's coronavirus tracker shows.

There were 574 new cases identified in the seven days between February 6 and February 12.

This gives a rate of 174.6 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 people.

Of the 10 boroughs in Greater Manchester, only Trafford had a lower rate for the most recent seven-day period.

Wigan's figure is also lower than the rates in neighbouring boroughs St Helens, Warrington and Chorley and is under the average for the North West as a whole.

However, Wigan is still above the England average, which stood at 142.4 cases per 100,000 residents.

Across the borough five out of the 25 wards saw an increase in cases from the previous week in the latest data.

Abram had the highest rate of cases for the latest week, which runs from February 4 to February 10.

Bryn had the second-highest rate.

Atherleigh saw the largest increase from the previous week, with a 25 per cent increase, followed by Ince where there was a 17 per cent rise.

There were 51 Covid-positive patients in the borough's hospitals as of February 16.

A total of 23 deaths mentioning Covid-19 were registered in Wigan in the latest week, which ended on February 5, and this was a decrease from the previous week.

Local tracing teams have successfully managed 93 per cent of contacts in all the cases escalated to them.
