A number of major construction schemes are part-way through at present and pressure is growing on the Government to order that all such work be halted to prevent the virus’s spread.

It has seemed reluctant to do so thus far, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Michael Gove saying he saw no reason why they shouldn’t continue with outdoor schemes at least, while there is active encouragement to continue with what are deemed “essential” projects such as the building of hospital buildings.

So there is no likelihood at all of a cessation to the work erecting new wards on the car park of Wigan Infirmary when that is part of the measures to cope with the pandemic.

But Step Places, the developer renovating the three historic buildings at Wigan Pier, has decided to down tools until further notice in the interests of staff safety.

Much of the overhaul being carried out at the education centre, former Orwell pub and what used to be The Way We Were museum - to turn them into a new events venue, food hall and distillery - currently involves indoor work with employees sometimes having to work in close proximity with each other.

And development director Gareth Smith said: “The health and wellbeing of our staff is paramount and so with this in mind we will most certainly follow the governments advice and cease work to protect the people on site the same as all other businesses across the UK to ensure we get through this time in a safe manner.”

What is currently the borough’s biggest engineering project - the construction of the A49 link road between Westwood Park and Warrington Road, Goose Green, is continuing apace though.

Becca Heron, Wigan Council’s director for economy and skills, said: “The A49 Link Road is an important project for the borough, but the health and safety of our residents and the workers on site are our highest priority.

“Wigan Council and the contractor, Jones Bros, are continually monitoring the evolving Government guidance and implementing all advised measures to reduce the risks associated with Covid-19, including increased hand sanitation and social distancing.

“Following the Prime Minister’s statement this week, the latest Government advice is that outdoor construction sites can remain open.

“Jones Bros have advised that, in line with this advice, the site remains open and they are continuing to work.

“Wigan Council and Jones Bros will continue to review Government advice and manage the Covid-19 risks appropriately.”

The link road is nearing completion. It began in the autumn of 2018 and bosses forecast that the road, easing congestion on other routes, would be up and running by this spring.

A precise completion date has yet to be set though.

Another project which has only recently got started, however, is the building of Wigan’s first Nando’s restaurant and another unit in the middle of the Robin Retail Park car park.
