The figures showing regional breakdowns for people being given the jab were published for the first time on Thursday by NHS England.

In the North West 266,585 people had received only a first dose of the vaccine by January 10.

Of those 131,407 were over 80 and 135,178 were under 80.

This means that in the region 3,775 people per 100,000 have received only one dose.

The rates for over and under 80s are 37,971 and 2,013 per 100,000 residents respectively.

That places the North West second out of the seven English regions for getting one vaccine dose to over-80s, with only the North East and Yorkshire having a higher rate.

The region is fourth in terms of the total rate of first doses.

Due to a switch in guidance part-way through the roll-out, some fortunate people have already had both their doses of a vaccine for Covid-19.

Originally the advice was that people should get a second dose after about three or four weeks, before the UK's chief medical officers changed the guidance on December 30 to ensure more people had at least one dose.

In total 51,860 people in the North West had received both doses by January 10, with 37,714 of them being over-80 and 14,146 being under-80.

That gives a total rate of 734 per 100,000 residents, with rates for the over-80 and under-80 groups of 10,898 and 211 per 100,000 people respectively.

The North West is ranked fourth out of the seven English regions for its rate of getting over-80s both their doses and third-highest for its total rate.

The highest rate of older people getting both doses is in the East of England, while the biggest rate of residents having two doses is in the South West.

The roll-out of Covid-19 vaccines has been done following national protocols, with groups thought to be at particularly high risk going first.

These have included care home residents and staff, over-80s and health and social care employees.
