Friends Winnie Shaw and Marion Darbyshire, who were reunited after 73 years apart when they moved into the Lakeside Care Home in Standish, were first to get the Covid vaccine there as the roll-out gathers pace.

At St Peter’s Pavilion in Hindley, which has been turned into a vaccination centre by the local CCG and GP services provider SSP Health, hundreds of older people have been inoculated in its first three days of operation. And health workers are gearing up for a further acceleration in workload after it was announced that over-70s will start receiving their jabs this week too.

All manner of buildings have been pressed into service for the operation in the North West including a rugby league stadium and cathedral.
