Greater Manchester will get £60m support package while in Tier 3 restrictions

Prime Minister Boris Johnson made the announcement in the House of Commons on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Johnson said the money would be distributed across the city-region's boroughs.

The £22m that was confirmed on Tuesday would be for local responses to the novel coronavirus, he said.

Mr Johnson then included Conservative MP for Leigh James Grundy in a list of colleagues he wanted to thank "for the support that they have given in this matter".

Responding to Mr Johnson, Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer said national criteria for funding areas hit by strict regulations should be agreed to bring an end to bitter regional standoffs over money like the one that had taken place concerning Greater Manchester.

He said: "I really think the Prime Minister has crossed a Rubicon here, not just with the miserly way he has treated Greater Manchester but with the grubby, take it or leave it way these local deals are being done.

"It is corrosive to public trust to pit region against region, mayor against mayor, council against council, asking them to trade away their businesses and jobs."

Local leaders had suggested that £90m would be needed to support the city-region's workers affected by the Tier 3 restrictions. That was whittled down to £65m but after the collapse of negotiations the figure announced by Mr Johnson was another £5m smaller than that.

The restrictions come into force at one minute past midnight on Friday.
