Amid strict controls of movement, residents came to their doorways, windows and balconies to show their appreciation and say thank you for everything the life-saving staff are doing for us.

The Clap For Carers Campaign which started online, was staged because "during these unprecedented times they need to know we are grateful", according to the organisers.

Channel 4 also joined in with a national salute to honour NHS workers battling the coronavirus pandemic with an advertising break takeover.

The broadcaster joined with 39 companies to thank those on the front line of the UK's healthcare system as part of the Clap For Carers initiative.
