In the week July 30 - August 5, Wigan had 32 new cases identified, a rate of 9.7 per 100,000 population and the lowest rate of new cases in Greater Manchester. This rate is also lower than seen regionally (North West rate is 20.9 per 100,000) but slightly higher than seen nationally (England’s rate is 9.2 per 100,000).

The Council said on social media: "Although the new infection rate has increased over recent weeks, it is still the lowest in Greater Manchester. However, some of our neighbours are experiencing larger increases, which is why we need to continue adhering to social distancing measures, practising good hand hygiene and wearing face coverings."

The total number of confirmed cases is now 2215, a rate of 674 per 100,000 population. This is a lower rate than for Greater Manchester as a whole (715) and higher than the North West (658). Wigan has the sixth highest rate of total cases of the 10 Greater Manchester areas.
