Hospital turns blue in recognition of our nurses

Atherleigh Park Hospital was lit up blue to mark International Nurses’ Day, paying tribute to nursing staff during the coronavirus pandemic.

The light signified the lamp used by Florence Nightingale, who was born 200 years earlier.

Wiganers also supported the day, thanking nurses with a video message sent out by NHS Wigan Borough CCG, which included artwork, pictures and videos.

Prof Craig Harris, managing director of the CCG, said: “It’s important to recognise the valuable work of nursing staff on International Nurses’ Day and always. For all our nurses working in the hospital, in the community, those retired and still in training, can I express my thanks for your hard work, compassion and commitment.

“As a qualified nurse myself for 20 years, I could not be prouder to be part of the nursing family. It’s been simply fantastic to see so many messages of support being sent in by

ordinary people, showing how much nurses are treasured.”

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.
