This is a rate of 4.6 per 100,000 residents, substantially lower than the regional and national averages.

It is also the lowest figure in Greater Manchester.

However, the data does also show that Covid-19 cases in Wigan are creeping up.

A slightly different timescale included in the town hall data tracker showed there were 19 cases in the week ending July 24, up from 14 the previous week.

Despite that, new weekly cases remain at theit lowest levels since mid-March, the council said.

There were two deaths with Covid-19 registered in the most recent week which statistics are available for, an increase of one.

All-cause mortality also rose by one in the same time period.

Altogether there have been 2,169 cases of Covid-19 in the borough, a rate of 665 per 100,000 people.

This puts Wigan above the rate for Greater Manchester and the North West.

There have been 347 deaths in Wigan involving the coronavirus, as of July 17, with 76 per cent of those occurring in care homes, 21 per cent in hospital and two per cent at home.

Currently Wigan's exceedence rating from Public Health England is red, meaning the data is not following expected trends. However, this can be quite volatile when the case numbers involved are small.

Public health experts say Wigan Council has been reassured there is no reason to be concerned given the borough's statistics.
