Wigan and Leigh Hospice denies claims it is stockpiling PPE

The borough’s hospice has moved swiftly and firmly to reject claims that protective kit is being stockpiled rather than used now by staff at its headquarters.

Wigan and Leigh Hospice responded after it was alleged by a source who contacted the Wigan Post that personal protective equipment (PPE) was being kept in reserve at its Hindley base in case the coronavirus crisis gets worse.

That, it was claimed, meant staff were working on the in-patient unit wearing only masks. The source said: “Surely things will get worse if they don’t wear the PPE now?”

However, the charity based on Kildare Street has said it is absolutely not the case that there are any restrictions on what equipment can be used.

Four patients have so far been tested for Covid-19 at the charity, with one test result still being awaited.

One patient tested positive and, sadly, later died.

Four staff members have also been referred for testing after exhibiting symptoms of the coronavirus.

The organisation said it is following the current national guidelines for health and care organisations and is doing everything in its power to keep both its patients and employees safe.

Anna Murray, medical director at the Kildare Street charity, said: “We have access to all the recommended PPE for the care that we are providing for patients on the in-patient unit and in the community, and all staff interacting with patients have access to the PPE when they need it.

“Nobody is being prevented from using the PPE they need. We have a clear policy and procedure relating to infection prevention and control for Covid-19 which guides staff as to what PPE is needed and how to use it safely.

“The policy is reviewed and updated regularly in line with changes in Government and Public Health England guidance.”

The hospice launched a public appeal at the start of this month for residents and businesses across Wigan and Leigh to help replenish its PPE stocks that were running short.

That resulted in considerable donations of equipment including gloves, masks, visors and aprons.

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.
