Band one staff at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh (WWL) Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were supposed to move up to band two wages in April next year in line with a national pay deal.

However, a backroom botch-up means those employees have been receiving band two wages since April, 12 months before they should have been.

That means the overpayments are now going to have to be recouped. However, a repayment plan for those involved has now been put together and the trust has said it is sorry for any stress or worry the mix-up may have caused workers.

A WWL spokesperson said: “Upon discovering this error, the Trust immediately wrote to every member of staff concerned to apologise for the error in payment and for any distress it may cause.

“Following advice from HR and Staff Side colleagues, the payroll department have developed a repayment plan which has been proposed to those staff affected.

“This will recover the overpayment of salary over a number of months and with the minimum amount being taken from their salary.

“Whilst the Trust has a legal obligation to recover any overpayment of salary, we were keen to ensure that the recovery of this overpayment was done in a way that reduced the financial impact on the staff members’ take-home pay.

“As a Trust, we continue to support the financial wellbeing of all our staff and would encourage any staff member with concerns or queries to discuss them further with the payroll department.”

WWL said that staff involved will only be moved back to their correct salary level in January to mitigate any financial hardship they may experience.

Repayment will only begin in April when the employees are all receiving the higher wages from moving up to band two.
