Wigan hygiene ratings: Latest results

Officials from the Food Standards Agency made 72 unannounced visits to food serving businesses across the borough in January 2020, but only 18 of them earned the highest rating of Five - a rate of 25 per cent.

The second highest score of Four was dished out to 21 venues, while 16 had a “generally satisfactory” level of cleanliness which resulted in a score of Three.

At the opposite end of the scale, there were 10 restaurants which received a One star rating, the second lowest.

Town centre eatery Mama Mia, in King Street, was the sole recipient of Zero, the lowest possible rating which means hygiene standards require urgent improvement.

Businesses that serve food are rated on how hygienically it is handled; how it is prepared, cooked, reheated, cooled and stored; the condition of the structure of the buildings; the cleanliness, lay-out, lighting, ventilation and other facilities, as well as how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe.
