Wigan Infirmary's A&E department is 'very busy'

Bosses at Wigan Infirmary are reminding people to only go to the A&E unit for serious and life-threatening emergencies as it experiences a surge in demand.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust reported the department was "very busy" on Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesman said: "Our emergency department (A&E) is currently very busy.

"A&E is for serious and life-threatening emergencies only.

"NHS 111 can help 24 hours a day, seven days a week if you have an urgent medical problem and you’re not sure what to do."

NHS Wigan Borough CCG highlighted that treatment for urgent health problems is also available at Leigh Walk-In Centre.

Attendances at Wigan's A&E unit plummeted earlier this year at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but have been climbing since.

Last week, health chiefs urged people not to go there to seek a Covid-19 test.
