Wigan OAP stuck in quarantined coronavirus hotel in the Canaries

A recently widowed Wigan pensioner is trapped in a Tenerife hotel which is the subject of a covid 19 lockdown.

Former builder Alan Cunliffe, 82, is confined to his room at the H10 Hotel Costa Adeje Palace after a fellow guest went down with the potentially lethal bug and has spoken of his loneliness, boredom and a lack of decent food and drink.

He said there were about 1,000 people in the hotel, estimating that between 150 and 200 were British.

"I'm here for two weeks and was supposed to be going home on Friday," he said. "I can't see that happening now. I imagine I'll be in quarantine for a fortnight when I eventually get back to Britain. I can't believe it."

He said the hotel had been on "lockdown" since this morning.

"I can't leave my room," he said "I can go out on my balcony. I haven't spoken to anyone else in the hotel. I don't know anyone who's ill and I feel fine.

"The staff have been trying their best. I've had a couple of bits of food but it wasn't great. A baguette and a few bits. I've had plenty of bottled water. But they don't make you a cup of tea or coffee or anything like that."

Mr Cunliffe said he said he was trying to find ways to pass the time.

"I'm sat here with nothing to do. I'm not happy with the way it's going. I haven't got anything to read. I've spoken to my nephew. But the internet isn't working very well so I can't FaceTime anyone.

"I've tried to watch the television but it's not good. It's all adverts."

He added: "I imagine they'll be want to get us out of here so they can clean the hotel and make some money. This must be costing them."

Back home in Britain Mr Cunliffe's nephew Jon Butler said: "He was supposed to be flying home on Friday. He's 82 and is there all alone. He has been stuck in his room all day without any information, no food, only water and is very concerned.

"He has not been contacted by the Foreign Office or any other officials, it seems and is in total limbo. Nor has the hotel or their staff been any help at all."

Mr Butler, 39, who lives near Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, added: "I have tried calling the British Consulate in Tenerife several times without success and have left messages."

Guests at the four-star hotel on the south west of the island have been sent a letter saying the hotel is "closed down" and they must remain in their rooms until further notice.

The holiday package firms Tui and Jet2holidays use the seafront facility with nearly 500 rooms, and has four pools and a gym.

A letter sent by managers to guests says they must stay in their rooms after a man there was diagnosed with coronavirus.

A spokesman for the firm Jet2, which has its headquarters in Leeds, said in a statement to the PA news agency: "We are aware of reports that a non-Jet2holidays customer staying at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace in Tenerife has tested positive for coronavirus.

"Under the advice of the regional and the Spanish government authorities, the hotel has been placed under quarantine. The health and safety of our customers is our absolute priority, and we will release more information as it becomes available.

"In line with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice, our flying programme remains unchanged."

A spokeswoman for Tui UK said: "We're aware of a reported case of Covid-19 at the H10 Palace Hotel in Costa Adeje, Tenerife.

"All guests have been asked to remain in their rooms and are being looked after by the hotel.

"Our holiday programme to Tenerife continues to operate as planned for all other hotels.

"We will provide a further update as soon as we have more information."

A statement from the hotel said: "Following the report of a possible coronavirus case detected in a customer from Italy, staying at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace, H10 Hotels has implemented all health and operational recommendations from the health authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of customers and employees.

"Additionally, we are providing customers and hotel staff all the necessary care and attention so that, despite the inconveniences this situation may cause, they are taken care of in the best way possible."
