The King Street side of the old town hall building partly demolished in November 1998.
At the time it was stated that the 130 year old Grade 2 listed Victorian building was being preserved for posterity and a mixture of offices were to be built.

The home of Wigan Rugby League Club for 97 years was to make way for a Tesco supermarket.
On the 6th of September 1902 Wigan played at Central Park for the first time in the opening match of the newly formed first division.
