Notorious local highwayman, George Lyon, was born in Up Holland in 1761 and after his capture was executed at Lancaster Castle in 1815.
The landlord of the Old Dog Inn, Simon Washington, brought his body back from Lancaster in preparation for burial at St. Thomas the Martyr Church in Up Holland.
His body was laid out overnight in in the landlady's best parlour at the pub and afterwards his ghost was said to haunt the premises.
