RETRO 1970 - The Shakespeare Hotel King Street Wigan.
The building was formerly the Theatre Royal which opened in 1850. It was behind a private house owned by a Mr Morris, this was demolished when the theatre was remodelled by Mr H J Worswick in 1890.In 1904 what was once the façade of the theatre was retained as the front of The Shakespeare Hotel.

As plans to revamp King Street, Wigan, are in motion, we take a look as some general views and buildings over the years.
The King Street side of the old town hall building partly demolished in November 1998. At the time it was stated that the 130 year old Grade 2 listed Victorian building was being preserved for posterity and a mixture of offices were to be built. Photo: Frank Orrell
