This week a time capsule was buried in College Avenue between the Town Hall and the Life Centre underneath where the plinth for the installation is being installed.

Money for the artwork which has been designed and created by Steve Winterburn, who was responsible for the Billy Boston statue, was raised last year but the project has faced several delays because of mounting costs for the plinth.

Now, however, the scheme is back on track with the capsule burial one of the last things to put in place before members of the public finally get to see the sculpture.

Items inside the capsule included a copy of the Wigan Observer, pictures, artefacts and coins all suggested by members of the history group behind the idea.

If all goes to plan the statue is to be unveiled in March.
