The first train to pass through Wigan arrived on a damp and drizzly, dull and overcast morning but was well worth the wait in the rain at 08.53.

It was the BR standard class 70000 Britannia hauling the “Fellsman” pulling into Wigan North Western Platform six to pick up passengers for the trip to Carlisle.

The train is run by Saphos trains and is one of only a handfull of steam hauled trains running in the country during the pandemic.

Masks had to be worn and no single bookings were allowed only in multiples of two.

She was on time and left on time in a flurry of steam and smoke.
