Robin Price from Hindley Green entered their picture of a merlin for the wilko Wild Bird Calendar competition.

And the nation retailer chain was so impressed with the image that Robin was awarded a £100 wilko voucher and selected as one of 12 winners to be featured in the official 2021 calendar.

Robin said, “I was delighted to discover that I had won the wilko Wild Bird photography competition and that my photo would be used in the 2021 calendar.”

Daniel Bingham, Senior Pets Buyer at wilko, said: “With the UK spending more time in their gardens throughout lockdown, we saw a big increase in the number of entries and quality of the photos of wild birds submitted to the competition this year.

“We can’t wait to see the final printed calendar in stores with the vast array of wild bird photography.

“It was a tough decision as there could only ever be 12 winners, but we were extremely impressed by Robin’s photo.”

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.
