A huge blaze which ripped through a commercial vehicle servicing business in Hapton sent clouds of thick, blac smoke billowing across Burnley and Padiham.

Firefighters from Burnley, Padiham, and Hyndburn tackled the blaze on Friday night which engulfed the yard at Frank Owen’s Commercial Vehicle Servicing business, in Accrington Road, and saw up to 5,000 tyres alight.

Thick black smoke billowed from the site and spread for miles through the air prompting the fire service to advise neighbours to keep their windows closed.

Eight fire engines and a cherry picker were used to quell the flames and police closed Accrington Road between junction nine of the M65 and Rossendale Road for several hours as a precaution.

A fire service spokesman said: “Firefighters prevented the fire from engulfing a building and stopped the blaze from spreading beyond the tyre stack.”

No-one was injured during the incident.

On Sunday, several fire crews remained at the yard, damping down and using on-site machinery to extinguish smouldering debris.

Police were also in attendance. It is not known at this stage if the fire was started deliberately.
