Air ambulance called to four-vehicle collision on motorway in Wigan

Emergency services have been called to the M6 in Wigan after a serious crash involving four vehicles.

Firefighters, paramedics and the North West Air Ambulance are attending the incident on Friday evening on the southbound carriageway between junction 26 at Orrell and junction 23 at Haydock.

Highways England said three lorries and a car were involved in the collision and one person was trapped in their vehicle.

The road has been closed and traffic is being diverted. Drivers should follow the hollow square symbol, exiting at junction 26 and travelling west on the M58 towards Skelmersdale, onto the A570 south to the A580 East Lancashire Road and travelling east to re-join the M6 at junction 23.

Motorists travelling in the area have been advised to allow extra time for their journey.
