Alison Murray has begun a crusade to gather up £5,000 in a bid to pay for the Ethiopian midwifery clinic for a year as well as to donate to the Hamlin Fiscular UK appeal, a charity for women with childbirth injuries.

And tomorrow she will be flying out to visit the hospital to see her work coming to fruition.

And while she is out there Alison will also take part in the 10k Great Ethiopian run.

Working as a community midwife throughout the borough, she saw the need for the hospital when she visited the country last year.

The 31-year-old explained: “I have always had a passion for travel and first visited Ethiopia in November 2014 as art of a group of medical professionals.

“Whilst out there I visited Hamlin Fistula, and was so inspired by the wonderful work undertaken.

“After further research into the charity I committed this year to raising £5,000 which will fund a midwifery clinic for an entire year, providing safe antenatal and delivery care to women in a rural community.

“I can’t wait to go and visit the hospital and take part in the run - I still can’t believe I’m doing that!”

Alison, who hails from Leigh, has attempted to reach her target by arranging many events, including high teas, a craft fair as well as talks to various community groups.

She has also inspired a group of people, led by Ruth Latchford, to knit blankets for local hospitals and host their own events to further raise funds.
