Ambulance station for sale - more houses set for Standish?

The site on Glebe Street, which ceased to be a base for the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) in 2014, has been listed on property website Zoopla with a price tag of £175,000.

The listing states that the site would be “suitable for redevelopment subject to planning” and as “potential residential scheme”.

NWAS stopped using the site as an ambulance station after a storm left the building with serious structural damage to the roof but they have said they have followed all necessary procedures, including consulting with the community before putting the building up for sale.

They have also spoken to Lisa Nandy MP, Healthwatch and the Health and Scrutiny Committee to inform them of its intention to put the site up for sale.

But Coun George Davies, who lives in the area, thinks there still needs to be a station for the emergency services to the north of Wigan.

He said: “I have always wanted to keep our emergency services in our community.

“Standish is getting bigger and more and more people will be moving here in the next couple of years.

“The ambulance station has been closed for three years now and it would be good to have emergency services based in Standish again.

“We called on them to keep the site open at the time but now it is up for sale.

“What is going to happen to the site I don’t know, it could end up having a few houses built on it.

“I do think there is very little in Standish, Shevington and Aspull in the way of emergency services and it would be nice for them to open up a new base to serve the north of Wigan.”

A spokesman for NWAS said: “We are disposing of all of our Wigan stations and moving all staff and vehicles into the new joint fire and ambulance station once it has been built - this is all part of our Estates Review which was launched in 2012.”
