The 22-year-old was detained on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and violent disorder following the incident involving a 28-year-old on Wallgate.

The man, who had been on a night out in the town centre, was walking to the taxi rank when a group of men approached from behind and he was hit on the back of the head.

The suspect has now been bailed until November 11.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has released fresh CCTV footage of people they still want to speak to regarding the incident.

DS Steve Baldam from GMP’s Wigan division said: “This was a totally unprovoked and cowardly attack on a man who had been enjoying a night out and was on his way home.

“He was viciously assaulted and has been left with a serious head injury in hospital.
